Pastor Ted joined Good Shepherd as Support Pastor in February, 2011. Ted visits members in our parish with caregiving needs, including those who are shut-ins, in hospital, nursing home, and those members we know who have care needs. He is also active as a teacher in our Adult Sunday School classes. These have proved to be incredibly populular with 40+ attendees as the norm each week.
Pastor Schneider is the former Bishop of the Metropolitan Washington DC Synod of the ELCA, where he served two terms before retiring in 2007. He was given the title Bishop Emeritus by the Synod Assembly that year. In his retirement, Pastor Ted has been the Interim Pastor at Epiphany Lutheran in Burtonsville, MD as well as serving as the Interim Bishop of the Delaware-Maryland Synod ELCA.
Pastor Ted served three churches in Pennsylvania as well as serving as the Senior Pastor at St. Luke Lutheran in Silver Spring prior to becoming Bishop. Pastor Ted is a graduate of Roanoke College and Gettysburg Seminary. In addition, he holds honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA, Roanoke College in Salem, VA, and Thiel College in Greenville, PA. He is a member of the Roanoke College Board of Trustees.
He has studied archaeology at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, and conducted a resident study at the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Studies in Jerusalem. Pastor Ted has been married to Doris Lee (nee Smith) Schneider since 1956. They have two children and six grandchildren.
